2K Hires Apex Legends Producer to Boost Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Follows Mixed Response

The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing unveiling last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure notified staff about this decision through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a clearer direction.

The president expressed that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to address gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Hires

The news echoes a similar action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the complete text from the president's memo:

Team—

I know you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a message, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and talented creators we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”

With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a clearer identity.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the criticism to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized direction - one that’s poised to fulfill its ambition to our audience.

Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To further the outstanding advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome the new hire as the new Lead of 31st Union. Following several months of discussions, he officially joins us on the specified date.

His guidance and background in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having spent the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most well-known series in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.

Please join me in welcoming Ben next week. We are all excited to persist observing the progress of the game in the months to ahead.

The President

Game Information and Concept

The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 together with a public demo. Initially, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the category."

"Face the opponents with new abilities, challenges, and tests that evolve every session. Will you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, risk it all, and hope your team can secure victory? The option is yours."

The game lacks an announced launch window or supported systems, but fans can expect more updates as development progresses.
